So first off. Sorry for not posting stuff. hopefully I can get into posting regularly, especially with my school studio project coming soon.

Exciting news is as follows.
I am going to SIGGRAPH 2011 in Vancouver as a volunteer!
for some, this might be old news but because its so close now it's starting to sink in what i'm doing.

For those that don't know what my studio project is.....
In my school, for the first semester of 2nd year, we have to complete a project that we choose. We then pitch that project to industry professionals and they grade our work.
Hopefully I will be doing a short 1:30 - 2:00 min short animated film for this project. I am also hoping to do it all exclusively in blender. some Maya may sneak in there but who knows.
I will be extensively documenting this project for all you guys who may want to see some behind the scenes. Ill defiantly be covering the modeling and texturing process as well as some homebrew motion capture with my kinect! But hopefully I will have some detailed videos for all parts of the project.

I am almost done with some concept art for this, so that will get posted soon, ill make a special folder just for that.

You can also look forward to a series of instructional screencasts that I will be uploading to either youtube or vimeo.

feel free to let me know if there is anything you would like to see either from the behind the scenes or the tut series.

Big things are approaching and updates will happen more frequently STAY TUNED! :)

Well I'm about to start what could be the largest blender project I have attempted. I will be creating Toothless the Nightfury from the movie How To Train Your Dragon. I'm hoping to try to get it as accurate as possible and to make it look almost identical to the movie (This is going to be a lot of hard work T_T ). I'm going to break it up into parts so that not only I have a clear path to completion, but I also have steps that I can post in the process. you guys could be especially helpful in the whole process. It would be helpful to have a set of neutral eyes to see if my model is in fact accurate. Also if you happen to have some good reference images at high res from the movie, that would be a bonus. I already have a few references but more is always better.

Let the Games begin!

This entry is a little bit late but what can you do. The blender 2.5 Beta has finally released and I am super excited for the amazing new features it has. I recommend anyone who is interested in 3D work to download this free software that rivals professional tools such as 3Ds Max and Maya, and in some ways even surpasses them. The Beta isn't fully stable yet but its super close. A huge improvement has been made over the sculpting system and the new interface provides an excellent and easy to learn workflow. This software is becoming a favorite of mine, especially with the amazing work done with it on the Durian open movie project called Sintel. Theres not much else to say about it except that I think that you should all try it, even if you only have a slight interest in 3D software. It's free, it's light weight, and it's available for any OS in both 32bit and 64bit.

As always, let me know what you think.

I don't understand why people say that James Cameron is an amazing director, that he was amazing in developing the tools he needed for the job.

People are genuinely impressed with Avatar, and they should be. By creating the largest motion tracking stage in the world and creating a camera that could be tracked are amazing things. The world is lush and exciting. The creature development and the texturing where amazing. Not to mention real time reflection in peoples eyes. Pandora is an amazing place and the Na'vi are an amazing race, with an interesting culture. These two things are responsible for 100% of the success of the film. The storyline was predictable and obviously overdone (as a side note, this is a funny analysis of the plot line in Avatar thenextweb.com/shareables/2010… ). Avatar also contained some of the most horrible lines I have seen in a movie for years. It's has good lines for about the first 45-60 min. and then it gets bad.

Both the plot line and script where written by Cameron! The things that he is directly responsible for are the things that held the movie back.

So who should be given credit?

The concept artists that created the world. The linguist who created the language. The 3d modelers, texture craters, and compositors from WETA Digital. These people should be given credit for creating one of the best environments in movie history.

If any other directior where placed in Cameron's place, they would have done the same as him. Except they would have gotton some real script writers. As a result it would have turned Avatar from an amazing world into the most incredible movie experience ever.

And Kudos to the guy who designed the trackable 3d camera for the movie (it wasn't Cameron).

Have you ever had to save your school? knowing that if you don't do something, that piles of damage and the possible destruction of your school may happen? I had this happen at school today.

Before we get into details.... I know. whats so bad about the death of your school? The truth is that I like learning things. not always the things they teach at school, but leaning in general is awesome. As a new years resolution, I decided to read one wikipedia page per day. We are in the age of information, and like Sir Francis Bacon said "Knowledge is Power". The more you know, the better off you will be.

OK.... back to saving the school.

as you may be aware. Winnipeg has been flooding with water over the past little while, almost as bad as the 1997 flood. Today, we started sandbagging a Dyke to protect our school from the ever approaching waters of the Assiniboine River. right now the water is about one to two meters away from the school wall, but our Dyke is holding and looks to be good for now. its interesting, knowing that without your help in building the Dyke, that your school might be flooded tomorow.
